Kids Bedroom Furniture Is Growing Up

Wednesday, May 1, 2013 by Norma Gaffin

Savannah Cherry Kids Bedroom Furniture Collection - Furniture.comOne of our favorite trends in furniture for kids’ rooms today is that people want kids’ bedroom furniture that will grow with them. While a sleek racecar or an over-the-top princess bed may be the stuff childhood dreams are made of, smaller versions of adult furniture are more practical and are becoming more and more popular. But you don’t have to throw the baby out with the bathwater – your child can still have a bedroom that meets his or her needs.

Kids’ Bedroom Furniture Is Just the Beginning

Your child’s twin bed, dresser, desk and other furniture form the basis of the bedroom. Look for an enduring style that a teenager won’t find embarrassing. Choose pieces you could picture working through a number of your child’s phases, from dinosaurs to pro-wrestling or princesses to Taylor Swift (or whoever the pop star of the day may be). With this foundation, you can then layer in age-specific decor.

Every Kids' Room Could Use a Splash of Color

Arts & Crafts Dark II Kids Bedroom Furniture Collection - Furniture.comColorful, bold design is another hot trend in kids’ rooms right now. So choose a bright color for the walls. You may even consider using wallpaper, either for the whole room or on an accent wall. Carry the colors through in the bedding and accessories. Remember, updating these items will be easy as your child grows, especially since you won’t have the expense of replacing the larger, core furnishings.

Personalize with Age-Appropriate Accessories and Art

Accessories and art are where you, and eventually your child, can really get creative. You can buy numerous items that reinforce your child’s passions, or you can add personal touches with toys and artwork that has been passed down through the family, use pages from favorite books, or even decorate with your child’s masterpieces. Be sure to involve your child. Not only will this get him or her thinking and developing their own design ideas, but it will also help in establishing the child’s room as a space of self-expression, and one your child loves.

How to Choose the Right Children’s Beds

Tuesday, October 23, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Your baby is growing up, and so are his needs at bedtime. Where once a crib or toddler bed was a safe place for slumber, your child needs a “real” bed that’s big and sturdy enough for his big dreams and growing body. But where do you start?

There Are Options Beyond the Twin Bed and Mattress

While you will most likely purchase a twin bed and mattress for your child, consider the size and space of the bedroom. If there is enough room, you may want to purchase a full, or double, bed from the start.
A full bed will definitely last into adulthood for your child, but you can rest assured that a twin bed will be adequate for his current needs.

Choose the right children's beds - Furniture.com - Jackie Kids Room Furniture CollectionKid Bed Options

When choosing the design of your child’s bed, first you’ll need to decide between a bed that looks like a child’s bed and one that is designed to grow with your child. While a beautiful princess or scurvy pirate ship bed will make your little one’s dreams come true, they don’t have the lifespan a more neutral design might have. It comes down to whether or not you will be willing to replace the furniture in a few years. Once you decide on this aspect of the bed's design, you have some other options to choose from:

Kids Bunk Beds: Chances are, your child already wants bunk beds, so you need to decide if, as a parent, this is something you want. They can be a great space-saving option if you have two kids sharing a room. But there are a number of safety issues to consider. Check out our previous post, “To Bunk Up or Not? The Pros and cons of Bunk Beds in Kids Rooms,” for more information.

Loft Bed: A loft bed is just the top half of a bunk bed. What it does is double the space of your child’s room by adding a “second floor” for sleeping. Sometimes the area underneath comes with a desk or futon for a studying or sitting area. This is one option for creating more space in a smaller room.

Bed with Trundle: Beds with trundles underneath are a great option for a child who might have sleepover guests. A second bed pulls out from underneath your child’s regular bed. You may also find a bed with trundle storage underneath. In both cases, the bed or drawer should easily pull out for your child’s use.

Captain’s Bed: Captain’s beds offer a lot of underbed storage through drawers that are all attached. This is a classic option for children’s rooms, because of all the extra storage space it affords. Captain’s beds are another great option for creating additional space in your kid’s room because of its efficient use of space.

A Quality Mattress

Don’t forget that your growing child needs a durable mattress to support him in his slumber. Whether you’ve decided on a twin mattress or a full, a bunk bed that requires a board or a more traditional bed that requires a mattress and boxspring set, you have a number of options as far as the types of materials the mattress can be made of. This post explains the different types of mattresses available can help you in your research.

Getting your child his first bed is a big step for him and you. We hope this helps you start the process.

Ornately carved wooden bedroom furniture is popular in California - Furniture.com - Monte Carlo Bedroom CollectionCalifornia Furniture Trends

Ornate furnishings with rich details are very popular in California, perhaps extending the glitz of Hollywood across the entire Golden State. Furnishings for both living rooms and bedrooms boast carvings in the exposed wood, and dining room furniture that mixes materials like wood and marble are very popular.

Utah Furniture Trends

In Utah, modern takes on classic furniture designs are among the most popular furniture trends. Overall, clean lines prevail no matter what the room, and updated twists on arts-and-crafts pieces are best sellers for the bedroom. Additionally, we sell a lot of kids bedroom furniture in Utah, where people opt for mature styles that will make the transition with the child through the teen years.

Oregon Furniture Trends

Case goods are in high demand in Oregon, especially entertainment furniture for the living room. Oregonians favor large entertainment units in dark woods with a lot of space to store their entertainment components as well as to display personal effects.

Washington Furniture Trends

In Washington state, sophisticated furniture designs are very popular, especially when they display an interesting mix of materials. Sleek modern wood beds with leather-upholstered headboards as well as clean-lined dining sets with wood, upholstery and stone are both very popular.

To Bunk Up or Not? The Pros and Cons of Bunk Beds in Kids Rooms

Thursday, August 30, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Bunks Beds with Storage and Stairs - Furniture.com - Sundance Ful/Twin Bunk NedsBunks beds are quite possibly the most coveted piece of bedroom furniture for anyone in the grade-school set. Having bunk beds in your room says a lot about a kid, including:

  • I’m always ready for a sleepover.
  • I like adventure!
  • No way I’m afraid of heights.
  • Give me a sheet and 1 minute, and I can construct a fort that will blow your mind!

But, of course, it’s not all fun and games when deciding on the perfect kids bedroom furniture for your children. Parents need to weigh the pros and cons to decide if bunk beds will be the best fit for their kids room and lifestyle. These insights, many from parents, should help you make your decision.

In Favor of Bunk Beds

When it comes to checks in the “Yes” column for bunk beds, fun is definitely a priority – after all, you only get to be a kid once. Bunk beds:

  • Create more space in the kids room.
  • Allow parents to give their children what they had wanted when they were kids.
  • Provide additional flexibility for sleepovers, whether your pint-sized guests use one of the bunks or an under-the-bed trundle.
  • Look cool.
  • Offer a great structure for imaginative play, like forts, puppet shows and more.

Considerations When Purchasing Bunk Beds

But even all the fun of bunk beds can have its drawbacks. Surprisingly, they’re not all about safety concerns but also the inconveniences bunk beds cause parents. Buying bunk beds also mean:

  • More reports of injuries related to bunk beds, which equals more worry for parents.
  • You need a specific type of mattress for the top bunk, because a regular mattress may be too thick and can impede the safety the railings and ladder provide.
  • Regular arguments over who gets the top bunk.
  • Difficulty making the bed on the top bunk and even more when it’s time to change the sheets.
  • Having to watch little house guests more closely.
  • A shorter window of use as compared to other beds – children under 6 should not use a top bunk, and by the time kids are in middle school, they are starting to outgrow them.
  • You need to regularly inspect the entire bed’s assembly to be sure the screws are tight, the bed is sturdy and the ladder is correctly attached.

Bunk Beds Require Rules

If you decide bunk beds are right for you and your home, you can put some rules in place in your home to encourage safe use and a good time. Here are some additional ideas, taken from Catherine Crawford’s post on The Stir:

  • Have guardrails on both sides of the upper bunk, even if one side is against a wall, with gaps no larger than 3.5 inches.
  • Keep things like ceiling fans in mind when deciding where to put the bunk beds.
  • Use a night light to help illuminate ladders in the dark.
  • No horsing around on the bunk beds!

Kids' Bedroom Furniture That Will Help Keep Your Child's Room Organized

Tuesday, August 21, 2012 by Stacy Ward

The secret to keeping a kid’s bedroom clean and clutter-free is providing furniture that is not only visually appealing but will also help your child stay organized. Kids have a much easier time keeping their rooms clean if there is plenty of storage space for toys and clothes and everything has a spot. Here are 4 kids’ furniture pieces that will not only add to the decor of your child's room, but will also help keep things tidy!

Chest of Drawers: A chest of drawers serves multiple functions as your child grows from infant to young adulthood. When your child is an infant, a chest is perfect for storing baby clothes, bibs and diapers. When your child is older, a dresser will continue to house clothing and hide other miscellaneous items you may prefer out of sight, like videos or remote controls.

Kids' Storage Bed: Storage beds multitask as both a comfortable place to sleep and a place to store items without taking up additional space. These draws are easily accessible for a small child and will keep clothes and toys from cluttering the floor. By choosing this type of kids' bed, you will create extra space in your child's room.

Bookshelves and Bookcases: Books play a key role in your child's development, and we all want our kids to love to read. What better way to encourage reading than a bookcase full of their favorite books? A sturdy bookshelf will not only provide storage, but it will also keep their books in good condition and provide additional space for smaller toys and knickknacks. After reading with your child, encourage him to return the book to its proper spot. This will teach him to take care of his property and help keep the room clean.

Desk: A desk is great furniture piece that will help reinforce the importance of schoolwork and give your child a space to study. If your child is on the younger side, a desk is great for housing art supplies and providing a place to draw and be creative. When choosing a desk, keep in mind a style that will complement the room's design as well as provide key functionality. The right desk will give your child a sense of responsibility over their own work and provide space for needed supplies.

3 Tips on Teens, Bedroom Furniture & Coexisting at Home

Wednesday, July 18, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

We recently had a coworker’s son, Justin Mount, visiting the office for the day, and, of course, we put him to work. Below, he shares some ideas on how today’s teens feel about furniture and their bedrooms. Perhaps his insights and tips might help you and your own teen-aged child find a peaceful middle ground when it comes to the house rules, kids rooms and common living spaces.

Kids Rooms Furniture, Teen Rooms - Furniture.com - Harley Kids BedroomAt home, comfort is the most important aspect for a teenager. Teenagers want to know that there will always be a place they can go during their limited downtime. Most teens feel like they don't get much time to relax between school, homework, sports and everything else they deal with on a regular basis, so when they can sit down and just relax, it's really important.

Tip: Make sure your teen has some space in his bedroom for sitting and relaxing. Think beyond the bedroom set and how you might be able to add a chair or even a small sofa. This doesn’t mean you have to bring in a television and all a living room’s comforts – it’s more about respecting that at times, teens just want to hang out in their bedrooms.

Other factors that go into teens’ thoughts on furniture is whether or not they will like the furnishings a few months from now and if they feel like they'll be able to entertain friends. If their hangout space is boring, they will not want to spend as much time around the house and will instead go other places where there is more to do.

Entertainment Center, Media Center - Furniture.com - Taylor Entertainment/Wall UnitTip: This does not mean your house must look like a romper room to keep your kids around, nor do you need a movie theater, bowling alley and more. You can create a home that appeals both to your older children and you. For example, if your child likes to play video games, make sure you have an entertainment center with lots of storage. Your child will be happy to have a place to store everything, and you’ll be happy that his electronics and accessories are not taking over your living room.

Lastly, your teen’s room or hangout area should reflect your teen. Consider decorating with his interests in mind, like cool patterns, sports teams, hobbies -- that sort of thing. If your teen has a favorite color, keep that in mind when picking out furniture or paint colors. No one wants to be surrounded by a color they can't stand.

Tip: Color, especially in your kid’s room, is one of the easiest – and most affordable design elements to change. Even if you are not planning a complete bedroom overhaul, you can work with your teen to find accessories and bedding that better match his tastes. Also, if you have an informal family room or finished basement where your teen tends to hang out and is the primary user, consider allowing him to put his own design stamp on the room with wall decor and the like.

Remember: Depending on your teen’s age, he might be creating a home of his own sooner rather than later, so you won’t have to live with his sports posters forever  even if you want to.

5 Questions to Help You Buy Kids Bedroom Furniture That Works for Everyone

Monday, June 25, 2012 by Norma Gaffin

Sundance Twin/Full Bunk Bed - Kids Bedroom Furniture - Furniture.com If my son had his way, his bedroom would have bunk beds, despite the low, sloping ceiling. As we took him on a tour of furniture stores to find a new bed we could all live with, he always retreated to a bottom bunk, pretending it was his dinosaur cave or superhero den – he was hooked. And we were happy he was occupied enough so we could talk to the salespeople about construction and alternate finishes.

When buying kids bedroom furniture, you need to find that magic mix of budget and style that will work for both you and your child. After all, it is the kid’s room. But it is under your roof and the money is coming from your bank account. Feeling the struggle already?

Here are 5 questions to consider and even discuss with your child, depending on his age.

1. What Kids Bedroom Furniture Are You Looking For?

Do you want to buy an entire new bedroom set, or are you just looking for a twin bed or desk and hutch? Setting the parameters that we were just looking for a bed helped to keep both my son and my husband and I focused. Once you start looking at all the options in kids bedroom furniture, it’s easy to get off task and let practicality go right out the door.

Hailey Kids Bedroom Collection - Kids Bedroom Furniture - Furniture.com2. How Long Do You Plan to Have Your Child Use This Furniture?

A Cars toddler bed might not get you through all of toddlerhood, depending on your child’s size. Kids grow – a lot and more quickly than you imagine. If you’re looking for bedroom furniture that will get a child through to the college years, then you need to worry about materials and construction. You also want to go with a neutral design that will work with an array of wall art and potentially additional pieces of furniture. The longer you expect your child to use the furniture you’re buying, the more you may need to spend.

3. How Much Do You Want to Spend on Your Child’s Furniture?

Now that you’ve considered the furniture pieces you plan to buy and how long you expect them to last, you can set a realistic budget. Don’t worry -- you can find quality affordable furniture. Your budget will help you stay on track and avoid surprises as you shop for furniture for your child’s room.

4. Are There Any Style Constraints?

Does your new furniture need to match any existing pieces? If so, be sure to consider the finish and style so your new items will work with what you already have.

5. Are There Any Physical Constraints?
Spirit Kids Bedroom Collection - Kids Bedroom Furniture - Furniture.com
When thinking about physical constraints, consider the room, your home and your child. If you plan to fit the bed into a specific nook or near a window, you need to be mindful of the space’s width and height. You’ll also want to be sure that all pieces will be able to fit in your doorways and physically be maneuvered into your child’s bedroom. And lastly, consider your child’s size and make sure, for example, he’ll be able to get in and out of bed unassisted, if he is younger. For example, when we were looking for my son, we thought a bed with trundle would be the perfect compromise since he wanted a bunk bed so badly. But most beds with trundles we found had a higher profile than his 3-year-old height could easily navigate.

Your answers to these questions will help you set some ground rules and help you choose at what points it will make the most sense for your child to make decisions about his own room and the furniture within it.
